Course Objectives:
Grabowski, Beth & Fink, Bill, Printmaking: A Complete Guide to Materials and Processes Prentice Hall, 2009
Expectations
In-class:
In-class time will be divided between work time, demonstrations, and critiques. Students will be expected to utilize class time effectively and efficiently. Come to class prepared, take notes, and expect to stay the entire time. Your Participation portion of your grade will be based on these criteria and discussion participation during critiques.
Homework:
Students will be required to create sketches as well as gather items for in-class exercises. Students will be expected to make significant headway on in-class projects between classes and over weekends. Students must take notes!!! Students may resubmit one project for reconsideration.
Grading:
Grades will be determined between participation (20%) and projects (80%).
Participation Break-Down (20%):
(10%)- Notes and sketches. A sketchbook should be kept, so that sketches and notes can be neatly organized. This can be a section in a sketchbook used for other classes. Notes should be thorough, covering each step of the process with specific instructions, they may be written on handouts. Sketches should include 3 well developed thumbnails, in this case a thumbnail should be large enough I can understand what is happening at least 5x5”. Each will be 5pts. per assignment.
(10%)- Attendance, Critiques, Demonstrations, and in-class exercises. I will take attendance everyday (5pts). Critique days are worth 10 pts. After four absences one letter grade will be taken off the students final grade. Critiques may not be missed and participation is mandatory.
Projects Break Down (80%):
(20%)- Screen Print Project
(20%)- Lithography Project
(20%)- Intaglio Project
(20%)- Woodcut Project
The Following is the Rubric by which all projects will be graded:
RUBRIC /100pts
Addressing the Prompt:
Did you complete the Assignment? Did you fully address the prompt E.G. did you turn in the correct amount of prints, are there enough colors or values.
/25pts
Craftsmanship:
Are the margins clean and even, is the paper town correctly, is the project editioned properly.
/25pts
Formal Elements:
Did you address the formal elements of art and design? E.G. composition, line, value, texture, shape.
/25pts
Content/Creativity:
Did you put thought into your image? Do the different elements of your image work cohesively to convey its meaning? How has your image/idea evolved or developed?
/25pts.
Grades will be based on the standard A-F grading scale:
A 90-100%
B 80-89.9%
C 70-79.9%
D 60-69.9%
F Below 60%
Explanation of Grades:
(A)Outstanding: exceptionally motivated, artistically curious with studio work and out of class research, regularly seeks and responds to criticism, exceptional quality in finished assignments, consistently high participation, strong work ethic, development of refined skill, excellent craftsmanship.
(B) Above Average: demonstrates considerable effort, competent and thoughtful work that displays a growth in knowledge, seeks feedback and responds to it. Strong work ethic, participates in discussions, development of competent skills. Sound Craftsmanship.
(C)Average: completes assignments, fair participation, basic requirements, capable skills, good understanding of course content, and emphasis on craftsmanship not apparent.
(D)Below Average: inconsistent engagement with studio work, incomplete work, low participation, disregard to feedback, poor work ethic, attendance problems, underdeveloped skills, poor craftsmanship.
(F)Failure: exhibits indifference to ideas presented in class, unwilling to participate, inadequate work, late work, frequently absent, lacks focus, little knowledge of instructed skills extremely poor craftsmanship.
Attendance:
Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Students leaving early or arriving late without approved consent or a doctor’s note will be counted as absent. Critiques and Demonstrations are mandatory. I will not make up demonstrations. The student will receive a one-letter grade deduction off of their final grade after four absences. Turning in late work will result in a one-letter grade drop on the late assignment.
Classroom Policy:
Students may not use cell phones or mp3 players during demonstrations or critiques. They will be allowed during independent work times, as long as the volume is at a reasonable level. This means that you can hear me when I am talking to you or making broad statements to the class. Often a question one student has many have, so it is important that you can hear.
